Think about a time you bought an article of clothing you loved so much you wore it all the time, but styled it the same way every time. Your outfits were starting to lack variety and flair. You’re now probably wondering, Mia, how do we solve that problem? One solution is to change the context of your favorite article of clothing. Now, Mia, what does that look like? We will be exploring that concept now!
The Staple at Question

I got this black satin top back in June of this year, and it became my favorite piece to wear. However, I started overusing it, and I’m the kind of person who gets addicted to something I love and starts constantly incorporating it into my daily life, so this top was no exception. With that in mind, I was afraid I might style this top the same way every time I wore it, so I decided to change the context whenever I grabbed it.
The First Style

For my first look, I went for a more vintage approach because I was going bowling, so I channeled the outfits bowlers wore in the 60s-80s. In this outfit, I experimented with funky patterns, bold colors, and unconventional layering: I paired the satin top with an 80s-inspired short-sleeved button-down underneath, a lime green midi pencil skirt, maroon knee-high socks, and a maroon tie as an upper-body accessory. I finished it with a black bucket hat. I took this basic black satin top and turned it into an electric, maximalist outfit that reflects my love for expressive, experimental fashion. This shows that styling a staple top doesn’t have to be boring, and versatility doesn’t have to be simple.
The Second Style

For my second look, I continued layering my black satin top with a long-sleeved leopard-print button-down, the statement piece of my outfit; for bottoms, I wore blue jeans for a more casual approach. Lastly, I wore cowboy boots, which added a western tone to the overall look. I like this look because the black top balances the leopard button-down’s boldness with the jeans’ simplicity, creating an everyday outfit with a little funk. For this outfit, I wanted something simple and easy for running errands and shopping, so I chose something comfortable but still chic; the black satin top pulls both ideas together.
The Third Style

For my third look, I took a more formal approach when styling this black satin top, as I was in a more professional mood and wanted to wear a blazer. I paired the top with a gray houndstooth blazer with neon yellow line details; underneath, I wore a neon yellow blouse, and for bottoms, I wore black-and-white houndstooth pants with black knee-high boots. This was such a fun outfit because I put a modern spin on 80s power dressing, inspired by a more structured, bold, exaggerated look. I elevated this top by wearing it formally. I wanted to experiment and see if this top could be dressed up for fancier settings, and the answer is yes, it can, but I have to change the styling context.
As you can see in all three outfits, I used the same top and changed its context, creating versatility and expanding its use. You can do this too; you don’t have to stop wearing your favorite pieces just because they’re starting to feel repetitive in your wardrobe rotation. Slowly start changing the context of your outfits. Also, have an objective for why you’re wearing the outfit you are, because a solid foundation will give you more direction and clarity on how to style it.
