Making Fall 2026 Trends Your Own

Fall is just days away, and with the new season approaching, new fashion trends are emerging. Many publications list and predict what will trend over the next few months as we enter the 2026 fall season. Many articles tell us what is trending and where to buy it, but they don’t offer enough guidance on how to style it. So this blog post will explore the upcoming fall trends and how to style and make them your own. The Chatelaine posted an article titled 4 Fashion Trends To Have On Your Radar This Fall this past week, highlighting four different trends that they believe could be seen this fall. The four trends that they mention in the article were “Moody Florals”, “Funnel-Neck Jackets”, “Knee-High Boots”, and “Balloon Pants”. These four trends offer a lot of range and variety, since some of these items can be seen as both staple and statement pieces. A staple piece is a foundational, versatile item you wear often and can easily mix and match with other pieces. Examples include a white T-shirt, a pair of blue jeans, or a black blazer; each is a timeless basic that rarely goes out of style because it’s so foundational. The opposite is a statement piece, which is a bold, striking item of clothing or jewelry that immediately draws attention and defines the visual style of the entire outfit. For example, a bright red trench coat, a chunky teal necklace, or a loud patterned sneaker could be a showstopper that draws the viewer’s attention to that piece. When it comes to statement pieces, an unspoken rule is not to incorporate too many within the same outfit, or it starts to feel tacky.

The First Trend – Moody Florals

Mia, how could I wear it?

Moody florals take the traditional floral print and add a darker twist that feels more appropriate for fall. So instead of a lighter floral palette, moody florals use a darker one. The colors include chestnut brown, midnight blue, mustard yellow, olive green, burgundy, charcoal gray, and black. Luckily, you can find this print on various clothing items, including tops, skirts, dresses, pants, jackets, and even accessories. So how do you style this trend? If you want to wear a moody floral dress, style it with boots for an easy one-piece fall outfit. If you’re more comfortable with a skirt, pair it with a simple sweater or T-shirt, so the skirt stays the main focal point. If you want something more comfortable, incorporating jeans and a floral blouse would make the outfit feel casual and everyday. Maybe you’re not ready to wear floral print. One way to dip your toe in is with an accessory, like a purse, so you can participate without committing. These are just simple ways to style a statement piece like moody florals.

The Second Trend – Funnel-Neck Jackets

Mia, what in my closet could work with it?

Funnel-neck jackets are a modern trend that can be an elevated outerwear statement because of the higher, structured neckline. These particular jackets can come in various styles such as wool, nylon, leather, bomber, oversized, and cropped, which is good because that allows room for versatile styling. You can also wear these jackets with everything from jeans and cargo pants to leggings, slacks, and even skirts. When wearing a funnel-neck jacket, I would start with the basics in your closet, like jeans and a T-shirt. Pairing the jacket with jeans and a T-shirt underneath would make the outfit feel casual and approachable. Maybe casual is not your style, and you want something a little more elevated. Swap the jeans for trousers, then swap the T-shirt for a more fitted top. You took the same jacket and made it more polished using what you already had in your closet. Now, you might not have a funnel-neck jacket, but you may have a jacket with a similar structure in your closet that you didn’t know how to put together. So take the funnel-neck jacket styling technique and apply it to a similar-shaped jacket.

The Third Trend – Knee-High Boots

Mia, how do I make this trend feel more like me than copying the model?

Of the four trends, knee-high boots are the staple piece trend. Knee-high boots are a classic item to own and style. So, when you look at how the model styles knee-high boots, they might not feel like you, simply because you wouldn’t style them the same way. All we need to do is find an outfit combination that fits your wardrobe and personality. Very similar to the last trend, knee-high boots can easily be paired with a lot of different items of clothing, such as skirts, dresses, jeans, and pants, which creates a lot of range that you could experiment with or allows you to pair them with something you already own and that you feel comfortable with. Owning a pair of knee-high boots is a great addition to your closet because they’re versatile and easy to style. For example, if you have a more casual aesthetic, pairing knee-high boots with jeans can elevate your outfit while still keeping you comfortable, since it stays within your style. If you lean towards a more feminine style, pairing knee-high boots with stockings and a skirt/mini dress might be the direction you want to head towards. You can still wear your favorite pair of boots without feeling like you have to copy the model or how she styles them.

The Fourth Trend – Balloon Pants

Mia, how do I incorporate them into my wardrobe without changing my style completely?

Balloon pants are a fun trend because they have a unique shape: most are voluminous, round, and cuffed at the ankle, which can make the bottom half of your body look wider. With your lower half more pronounced, I would choose tops with a simpler silhouette and a more structured fit. Unless you want to emphasize the wide silhouette, a wider top would be just as acceptable. These pants are interesting because they are harder to incorporate into your wardrobe. If your style is casual, pair balloon pants with a simple T-shirt and sneakers to make them feel like an everyday outfit. If your style is edgier, add a leather jacket and swap the sneakers for boots to bring in the edge you are looking for. Also, you don’t need to make the entire outfit trendy just because these pants seem highly in style. These pants might be bold and outside your comfort zone, but don’t let them control your style or how you wear them. I recommend pairing the pants with an outfit you already know works for you. Again, like the second trend, you might not have a pair of balloon pants, but if you do have similar bottoms, these tips can still apply.

These are four of many trends that will be occurring throughout fall 2026. That said, you don’t need to change your style every time a new trend comes out; instead, let those trends inspire you, and see if you can incorporate them into your wardrobe and make them yours.
